Over the past few years there’s been an explosion of adult colouring books, quite a few of which *may* found a way into my house…flowers, patterns, animals, you name it, there’s a colouring book out there for you and guess what?! There’s now one out there for us IBD fighters – Crohn’s and Colitis Color to Cope!

Taking time out to colour even the simplest of patterns or pictures is a really easy way for me to relax. Not only am I creating something pretty but I find concentrating on staying within those lines helps me focus so my mind isn’t all over the place thinking about work or laundry or what to have for dinner or how shitty I’m feeling.  One of my favourite places to set up colouring camp is at my Grandma’s old desk in our tiny front room – it’s peaceful, the light it fantastic and it’s got that smell of old books and furniture polish that in itself it really calming.

I really love this particular colouring book not only for the colouring in but because the 27 images are there to support IBD-ers to both have a fun and vent and also support and help us stay positive. Some of the quotes really make me think “yep! That’s me!”.

Some of the pictures are less detailed than others and most of the time I would prefer a fuller page and something a little more detailed but actually, this works out pretty well for days when my joints are killing me because I can still spend time colouring without the fiddly bits.

There are mixed reviews from the scientific community about the benefits of adult colouring books.  Some people say it’s a bit “meh” and that actually creating something yourself (drawing, painting, needlework, knitting, etc) is much more beneficial but then there are others that say they have seem great improvements in anxiety and stress reduction when people do take out time to colour.  It could be just that quite time to do something that doesn’t take a lot of thinking, it could be feeling like you’re going back to your childhood, whatever it is I find it works for me!
