At the beginning of the year I promised myself I’d try to look after myself a bit better, to try to clear out any feelings of stress and just take some time for myself.
I’ve been trying but probably not hard enough! What better way to give myself the little nudge I need than to actually think about what I need to be doing, do it and then tell everyone about it…
So napping. I’m reeeeeeally good at napping. Luckily I come from a long line of nappers plus Mr Crohn’s is a seasoned pro so understands the benefit of a good nap. Surprise naps are great but if I want a proper planned nap I have a few things I love to have to hand to make it the best nap possible.
Freshly washed sheets
Who doesn’t like climbing into a bed with nice fresh sheets?! It’s even nicer if you’re coming straight out of the bath or shower don’t you think? I don’t have the most luxurious thread count or fancy duvet cover or pillows (mine are from Tesco and Ikea…) but just that crisp freshness makes me want to cuddle up and get napping!
Until about a year ago I was not a pillow/room spray kind of girl. One day I was visiting my local Neal’s Yard, smelling everything in the shop (as you do…) and came across the Goodnight Pillow Mist. I love the smell of fresh lavender and it is supposed to be relaxing but it’s so hard to find a lavender scent that doesn’t smell overpoweringly soapy and fake. The Neal’s Yard spray is subtle, not fake smelling and although it does have more citrusy vetiver and mandarin, it’s still a lovely relaxing scent. I usually give my pillow a couple of spritzes when I put fresh sheets in and then the odd spray when I feel the scent is fading. Does a pillow spray really relax me that much? Maybe, maybe not but it’s just comforting and delicious!
P.S. sometimes the whole bedding change can be a bit much when fatigue is hanging around so I use the pillow spray to just freshen up my sheets…
My mum bought me this Bucky 40 winks sleep mask maybe a year ago (as I said, my family takes napping seriously!) and it’s by far the best one I’ve ever tried. I hate it when I’m trying to nap and even with the bedroom blind down there’s always light that creeps in. This is made from the same sort of foam you get in padded bras so not only is it comfy as hell, it kind of squishes against your face (in a good way) to block out pretty much any light. It curves out around my eyes so I don’t feel like there’s anything pressing again my eyes and it has a velcro strap so I can make it as tight or loose as I need. I’ve just had a look at their website and there are some fab designs as well!
Little noises can bother me when I’m trying to doze so like complete silence or some sort of white noise. I can’t remember how I came across this track, possibly when I was googling how to get back to sleep when I wake up in the wee hours, but it’s amazing! Apparently the band worked with sound therapists to create the “most relaxing song” and I have to vouch for this! When I’ve had this playing either for a nap or if I wake up in the middle of the night I have such a good sleep and usually some incredible dreams as well! There’s a 10 hour version on YouTube so good to last the whole nap/night without some random song starting to play after it’s finished!
Having a nap for me is one of the nicest ways to recharge, de-stress and “pamper” myself, especially when I’m flaring. Fatigue and achey joints can be a bitch at times so napping really helps me with both of those. If you’ve got any napping tips or things that help you doze off, I’d love to hear from you!
